Microsoft suggests you change the format of your hard drive to NTFS to install Vista- actually, I think you have to change to NTFS.
If your hard drive is formatted in FAT32- it’s best to back-up your files, they may get corrupted or deleted in the formatting process.
But if you already have NTFS, then there’s no problem- you can install Vista right over your XP operating system
If you were to install Vista on a clean partion(raw disc space)…
You’ll get a Dual boot(2OS)system…cool?
Well you have a number of options here.
You can dual boot XP and Vista if you so wish by repartitioning your drive to install Vista along side your already existing XP install.
Then there is the option of just installing Vista cleanly on the machine, by formatting the drive and installing Vista on a new partition. That would completely erase XP all together.
Its really your choice, when I upgraded to Vista, I just repartitioned my drive and dual booted XP. Now I have Vista on there all by itself.
If you install Vista -ALL info is gone. You must back up your -pics,music,files,etc.
But your main problem is your drivers.Like sound, video, etc. Also some programs will NOT work because they are not Vista compatible.
If you have a lot of programs and games, check into it if they are Vista compatible-if you cant use them-Better stay with XP.
well before you do that make sure you run the upgrade check to make sure your system can run Vista well it takes a min of 2 GB of RAM. I suggest you dual boot though you can do this by go to and getting a free partition manager or downloading trial of partition magic and splitting you HDD into 2 partitions. then you just need to install Vista on the second partition and you won’t lose anything. but if your wanting to just have Vista then yes you need to delete the old partition to remove XP and when you create a new one and install Vista it will format it for you.
only if your hard disk is FAT format
Yes you will need to install Vista (or any OS) on to a formatted drive. If you have more than one drive, or more than one partition, as others have said, you could install it alongside XP, but you’re unlikely to need this, unless you have any old software or hardware that isn’t compatible with Vista.
If you only have one drive your best bet is to back up any files you need and wipe the hard disk, then once you’ve installed vista copy the files back onto your disc.
When you format the disc you can make your life easier for the future by splitting up your hard disk into seperate partitions, so that you can have Windows and all program files on one partition, and all your documents and files you want to keep on the other. This means in the future, if you change OS or have any problems with Vista, then you can wipe just the partition with Windows on and it won’t affect all your important files.
Just remember that each time you install an OS you have to reinstall any programs or drivers you had before – you can’t keep a backup of these as Windows won’t recognise them. You can of course keep backups of the files that install them though.
